Quite a bit of Francis lately. Having burned through most of the available works of Jeter I find myself with a lack of a large body of work from a good author. This has been filling in nicely. [ 11.13.08 ] Yes, Uncle Ted's offering. I quit reading part way through. One could call me a quitter. Or one could say I was smart with a decent self-preservation instinct, ceasing stabbing myself in the brain with a semi-sharp stick. That kind of double sided logic is exactly what I got from the book. Too much rhetoric, too many "I, the blackest man ever, can solve everything before breakfast" ideas that simply won't work because they're addressed as singular items, totally disregarding elements that affect in as well as outbound effects that will ripple in to other areas. They say that the world is messed up because all the guys with all the brilliant solutions are busy cutting hair and driving cabs. At least one of them is playing guitar somewhere, also. Between all the "I'm a badass and my life is great rocking out and rolling on and rambling endlessly with my yee haa sentences that sound just like I speak" statements combined with all the Team Jesus justification for ill behaviour, I was getting a little fuzzy in the head. When I started seeing contradictory statements I gave up and put it down.
Do not buy. I'll gladly send my copy.
opt comment [ 11.02.08 ] Frank recommended this to me when he gave me Imajica. Finally found it now that it just released in paperback. Interesting. The colour and staining of the pags was a nice touch. [ 10.30.08 ] Another one that Duck tossed me. [ 10.27.08 ] [ 10.19.08 ] [ 10.12.08 ] Impusle buy as I was reading Silks while actually shopping for Clive Barker. [ 09.22.08 ] Thomas once recommended Come To Grief to me when I was dealing with a lot of shit. It helped. I found this in CostCo recently which makes it kind of rare since after my first time looking at their book section I gave up on ever seeing anything there which may interest me. Total luck I found this; glad I did. [ 08.19.08 ] [ 09.14.08 ] Gift from J. A collection of short articles or lectures. Probably the least offensive of his non-fiction works I've read thus far. [ 09.13.08 ] Not as odd as Voices From The Street, but not PKD at this finest, by any means. Rather far from it, really. [ 09.01.08 ] [ 08.31.08 ] Picked this up sometime around high school or just after, finally found it uncrating some old cartons found when moving. [ 08.24.08 ] Reread. Anticipation for the movie is killing me. [ 08.14.08 ] Another loaner from Duck. In 1968 the Soviets sunk the nuclear submarine, USS Scorpion. The U.S. navy lied about the events that occured to family members of crewmen, and to the U.S. as a whole. The author presents a heavily-footnoted work here, with references to documents gathered via FOIA requests, interviews with former crew and naval commanders from that era of various rank, and presents a high compelling arguement on many fronts that the Scorpion was not "lost" but was indeed sunk by a Russian sub. A very fast and compelling read. Likely going to be grabbing this for my own bookshelf.

[ 08.01.08 ] [ 07.06.08 ] [ 06.15.08 ] Dan Geer addresses the data on your network as the critical item which needs to be secured, not the network itself. As networks expand and data is shared between various business partners the perimeter of the network blurs and the point of enforcement becomes indistinct. As such, securing the network becomes problematic. Data has always had value. Here, we learn to assess that value and determine the worth of adequately ensuring its protection. [ 06.06.08 ] A loaner from Duck. It's a big read, and a fairly slow one if you're not overly familiar with obscure military battles and little-discussed commanders. Points and considerations are issued throughout which really go well outside-the-box for understanding how "lesser" armies have been victorious through history. [ 05.24.08 ] An winter solstice gift off my Amazon list from J. [ 02.08.08 ] Another one handed down from Frank. It's epic; 827 pages without counting the appendix. I'm told it was originally published as two separate works but has since been combined into one volume, which I have here. [ 01.20.08 ] |
